Studies on the production and consumption of honeydew in hedges in Upper Franconia

Of 25 sap-sucking insect species recorded on shrubs in hedges in Germany in 1988, Psyllidae on hawthorn (Crataegus) and Aphididae on blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) were the most abundant, producing considerable amounts of honeydew. Honeydew production on most hedgerow plants reached a maximum in spring, with a sharp decline in summer and a 2nd, smaller, peak in autumn.
