Study on mutagenic effect of gamma rays on immature embryo callus in Triticum aestivum

Somaclonal variation in immature embryo callus of varieties Yuanfeng 5, Jinan 13 and Klobatla was studied following gamma irradiation (0-2000 rad). Plantlet regeneration rate was best (50%) at 1-1.5 krad. Plantlets in the M0 generation were weak and showed non-heritable variation in dwarfness, spike size and sterility. Plantlets in the M1 showed great variation for plant height, spike shape, glume colour, and awn and grain morphology.
