Genetic and physical evidence was obtained for plasmid-linked lactose metabolism (Lac+) in Lactococcus lactis var. cremoris strains AM2, EB9, ML1, Z8 and E8. L. lactis LM0230 was electroporated using each of the L. lactis var. cremoris plasmid pools. Lac+ transformants were selected on bromocresol purple lactose agar (BCP-lactose). All the L. lactis transformants contained a single plasmid band as determined by agarose gel electrophoresis.
