The Late Quaternary history of kauri (Agathis australis) in New Zealand and its climatic significance

Abundant sub-fossil wood of kauri (Agathis australis) is preserved in the peat swamps throughout the present distribution of the species in North Island, New Zealand. Analysis of 107 radiocarbon dates from this material shows 2 main groups: a northern group representing late Pleistocene interstadial forests, and a southern group relating to the mid to late Holocene expansion to the southern limits of the species at about 38 degrees S.
