The breeding, evaluation and release of four new rootstocks for table grapes

The breeding, evaluation and release of four new rootstocks for table grapes

Deciduous Fruit Grower 43(8): 285-290

Following an outline of a breeding programme at the University of Stellenbosch aiming to increase the range of available rootstocks, 4 rootstocks that have been released are described. US17 and US41, both resulting from a cross between Ramsey and Richter 99, are suitable for close plant spacing because vigour in the grafted state is poor and both yield half to two-thirds the shoot mass of Ramsey. Grafted vines yield a high proportion of grape to shoot mass.
