An account is given of the use of the Lumac ATP bioluminescence technology in UHT sterility testing. In order to validate the test, Gram-negative and Gram-positive cultures were inoculated into cartons of UHT milk through a self-sealing rubber patch at a level of 1-10 cells/carton. Cartons were incubated at 30 degrees C and tested daily for 3 days by both the Lumac method and by plating. After 48 h, 97% of all cartons tested showed growth and all such cartons were detected by the Lumac method.
