Six artificial nests for Dolichoderus thoracicus, a biological control agent of Helopeltis theobromae were compared in cocoa plantations in Malaysia during 1990. The labour and costs for manufacture of each nest type were calculated. The parameters discriminating the different nest types were: global cost of production and introduction; and average size and composition of colonies of D. thoracicus in each nest after 3 weeks residence. The number of ants per unit investment was estimated.
