The use of corticosteroids in Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia

, : The use of corticosteroids in Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Journal of Infectious Diseases 162(6): 1365-1369

Corticosteroid therapy in AIDS patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), when started early with antibiotics, appears to ameliorate the deterioration in pulmonary function and gas exchange that accompanies conventional therapy. If initiated after this deterioration, corticosteroids do not enhance oxygenation or show other clinical benefit. Adjunctive corticosteroid therapy for moderate to severe PCP is the recommendation of a panel that evaluated the existing data in 1990.
