The use of intravenous pentamidine as prophylaxis against Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in patients with HIV infection

, : The use of intravenous pentamidine as prophylaxis against Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in patients with HIV infection. International Journal of Std & Aids 5(5): 353-355

Eight men with multiple drug reactions used intravenous (i.v.) pentamidine as Pneumocystis prophylaxis. Seven had AIDS before starting pentamidine treatment and the eighth had advanced symptomatic HIV disease. Each patient received a monthly i.v. infusion of pentamidine at a dose of 4 mg/kg over 1 h. Three of the 8 patients developed P. carinii pneumonia while taking pentamidine, but compliance was poor.
