The use of irradiated Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks (Ixodoidea: Ixodidae) to induce resistance to infestation

The use of irradiated Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks (Ixodoidea: Ixodidae) to induce resistance to infestation
Experiments were performed to see if resistance to infestation by R. appendiculatus could be induced in rabbits and cattle for experimental purposes by the feeding effects of adults sterilized with gamma radiation. Doses of 0.15-2.40 krad were tested and 1.20 and 2.40 krad were found to be satisfactory, the latter causing a 50% extension in the feeding time and 35% reduction in weight of engorged females, followed by no larval production.
