The use of near infrared polarimetry to determine the polarisation of raw sugar
Elimination of lead from the determination of the polarization of raw sugars (owing to environmental concerns) has led to the use of sugar solutions not clarified with lead and the introduction of a near-infrared (NIR) polarimeter. Samples of VHP, brand 1 and brand JA raw sugar with dextran levels of 10-120 mg/kg from the 1991 season in Queensland were used in experiments to compare the NIR technique against the conventional with lead-based clarification.
