Tourism development during 1980s and its socio-economic impact in China

Tourism development during 1980s and its socio-economic impact in China

Contours Bangkok 6(2): 25-28

Between 1980-88 inbound tourist arrivals in China increased dramatically. The number of overseas arrivals grew at 23.91% per annum while foreign arivals grew at 16.88% per annum. Tourist revenue had an annual growth rate of 17.53% during this period. Arrivals dropped in 1989, following the suppression of the democracy movement and, to a much lesser degree, because infrastructure and transport developments could not maintain pace with the increase in tourist arrivals.
