A study was undertaken to find a better method of extracting components of western red cedar (Thuja plicata) which are of value to pharmacologists, the perfume industry, etc. Tropolones were efficiently extracted using a supercritical carbon dioxide extraction procedure. The yields and composition of the extractives obtained by hot water distillation were compared with those of the extractives obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide from the same source.
