Since the late 1980s, biotechnology has been given a high priority status in Turkey. Biotechnology research is now undertaken by more than 20 laboratories at the universities, the Turkish Science and Technology Research Institute and specialized research institutes of the Ministry of Agriculture. The total number of researchers currently working in biotechnology is about 300, of which around 200 are in plant biotechnology.
