This study was conducted to: (1) determine if NO3 leaching from the root zone to shallow groundwater could be reduced using cereal grain cover crops; (2) evaluate the relative effectiveness of various small grain cultivars for N assimilation at different planting dates; and (3) determine the impact of cover crops on subsequent maize grain yields.
