Varietal characteristics affecting ratooning potential of sugar cane



Sugar Cane ( 6): 1-4



A total of 181 varieties were evaluated for ratooning potential in 3 separate sets in 3 field experiments conducted during 1982-88. Varieties with higher plant cane yield were the best ratooners. Tillering, stalk population and ratoon stubble sprouting were recommended as useful characters to identify the better ratooners. Among the standards used, Co6304 was the best ratooner, producing 72-83 t/ha in the ratoon crop. Thirty-three varieties recorded higher ratoon cane yields than Co6304.
