In 3 carnation cultivars grown in 9-cm pots, pinched once, allowed 3, 4 or 5 shoots and transplanted to greenhouse benches, pot densities of 82-121 pots/msuperscript 2 before planting with 4 shoots/plant gave better plants at lower densities because of shorter shoots but there was little effect on flower quality. When planted on benches at 49, 65 or 75 plants/msuperscript 2, flower quality decreased with increasing density and increasing number of shoots/plant.
