The physically-based modelling system HILLFLOW contains a number of submodels covering physical processes such as interception, evapotranspiration, infiltration, water dynamics in the soil matrix, interflow, and surface runoff. The significance of macropores for the infiltration process and lateral subsurface stormflow is emphasized. Infiltration modelling and non-capillary subsurface stormflow were based on the presence of a macropore system in the soil.
