A comparison of 'Empire' apple fruit size and anatomy in unthinned and hand-thinned trees

A comparison of 'Empire' apple fruit size and anatomy in unthinned and hand-thinned trees

Journal of Horticultural Science 70(3): 375-387

A stereological (morphometric) method was developed to analyse the anatomical features of fresh apple Empire fruit sectors cut in the transverse equatorial plane. (Data were collected at Geneva in 1987, in a 10-year-old commercial orchard of Empire trees on M.9 and trained as slender spindles). Fruits were sampled from unthinned trees or trees hand-thinned to 1 fruit/cluster at -7, 0, 10, 20 or 40 d after full bloom (DAFB).
