A study on the flowering habit, fruit set and physiological fruit drop of Valencia orange and their manipulation

During 1981-86, observations on 17- to 21-year-old trees of Valencia grafted on Poncirus trifoliata rootstock were conducted in the citrus orchard of the Institute. Results showed that the high incidence of physiological fruit drop and very low % fruit set of this cultivar were related to the large number of imperfect flowers produced. The % fruit set could be much increased by cutting out 30-50% of the imperfect flowers and thinning out the weak spring shoots with no more than 3 leaves.
