All animals in 10 Michigan dairy herds had been tested for BVDV and BVDV antibodies. The herds were divided into 3 categories: A, 5 herds without persistently infected (PI) animals and without vaccination; B, 2 herds without PI animals but with use of killed vaccine; and C, 3 herds with use of killed vaccine and presence of PI animals. The probabilities of obtaining at least 2 or at least 3 antibody-positive animals or animals with high titres in a screening sample of 5 animals was calculated.
