Approaches to slope protection and erosion control: the best route through the maze of options

Erosion losses can be minimized by adopting landform grading practices, preserving native vegetation, land clearing, measures to reduce runoff. A classification of methods is divided into 3 major categories: lime construction (grasses and plants), mixed constructions (biotechnical and soil bioengineering methods) and inert constructions (concrete gravity walls, cylinder pile walls, tie-back walls).
