Studies in Aveyron, France, from the beginning of March or April to mid-July 1990-91 compared grazing systems and forage availability on 2 farms supporting dairy cows and 2 supporting dairy ewes, each pair similar in milk production and winter feeding regime but differing in grazing management and stocking rate. Estimated amounts of energy derived from grazing were highest under high stocking rates and lowest when N application was low and amount of residual herbage was high.
