This paper (originally published in Rural Finance, December, 1993) looks at the demand for rural credit in India and the views of the Agricultural Credit Review Committee. The National Institute of Bank Management estimated rural credit requirements at four different stages of needs: survival; improvement; intensification and diversification of the farm sector; and the diversification of rural economy.
