Demography of the worker caste of Leptothorax allardycei (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Demography of the worker caste of Leptothorax allardycei (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Annals of the Entomological Society of America. September; 875: 562-565

The demography of workers of Leptothorax allardycei was studied by marking and monitoring individuals within colonies maintained in the laboratory. The maximum lifespan for a worker in this study was 300 days, with an average life expectancy, at eclosion, of 145 days. The workers showed a type I survival curve. Life expectancy declined slowly until an age of ~ 100 days, after which there was a marked decrease in the rate of change of life expectancy.
