The procedure for linear scoring of beef cattle used in France consists of scoring 19 traits on a scale of 1-10. Scores of appropriate traits are aggregated (4-6 traits) for overall muscularity, skeleton size and functional ability. This method was established 20 years ago and >200 000 calves were scored in 1992 in the national on-farm beef performance recording programme.
