Microspores at the middle to late uninucleate stage, from 3 japonica cultivars, were cultured on 5 media. On media 1 and 2, which contained sucrose as the carbon source, only a few microspores divided and no callus formation occurred. A high frequency of callus induction occurred when microspores were cultured on media with maltose as the carbon source. All 3 genotypes, 02428, Xiushu 117 and Taipei 309, responded to this medium and produced numerous calli.
