Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) were kept at 26 degrees -28 degrees C throughout the experiment (controls) or at 20 degrees -22 degrees from 22 days of age. After 20 days at the lower temperature, the fish were then returned to the higher temperature (26 degrees -28 degrees ). It was shown that the lower temperature retarded development of the gonads. Differentiation of gonads was suppressed, and during the entire period of gonad development dying oogonia and oocytes were found.
