Field trials in 1987-89 on a red ferrallitic soil in Matanzas, Cuba, were conducted in an attempt to maintain stability and volume of seed yields beyond the 2nd year of production in A. gayanus CIAT-621. Swards were subjected in May to either disc ploughing + 2 passes of disc harrows (2000 kg) with or without additional use of a cultivator to a depth of 20 cm; use of a cultivator to 20-30 cm depth; or 2 passes of disc harrows (2000 kg).
