Three groups of lactating Murrah buffaloes of 6 each, were fed three treatment rations T-1 (Control), T-2 and T-3 (20 and 30% CP from oil cakes replaced by LLM). All the rations were isoproteinous and isocaloric. The lactation study (90 d) showed that the average daily milk yield and its composition did not differ significantly amongst the 3 treatments. The metabolism study revealed that the nutrient digestibility coefficients as well as the nitrogen balance status were non significantly different amongst the treatments. The feed cost was reduced by 11.5 and 21% in the treatments T-2 and T-3, respectively as compared to T-1. The study, therefore, revealed that LLM protein can replace oilseed protein in the ration of lactating Murrah buffaloes up to 30% without any deleterious effect on nutrient utilization and milk production.
