Effect of residual phosphorus applied to forages and nitrogen on maize yield

Field studies on kharif maize (cv. Ganga 5) were conducted at Research Farm of CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar to work out the effect of residual phosphorus applied to summer forages and nitrogen on yield of maize and its yield attributes. The crop was fertilized with four nitrogen levels (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha) under split plot design preceded with five summer forages, viz., cowpea, clusterbean (legumes), maize, pearlmillet and sorghum (cereals) and with fallow crop rotations. The forages were fertilized with two phosphorus levels (0 and 40 kg P-2O-5/ha), in main plots. Preceding leguminous forages resulted in significant increase in stover and grain yield of maize over cereal forages. Phosphorus applied to preceding forages did not affect maize yield and its yield parameters significantly. Significant linear increase in stover and grain yield of maize and its yield attributes was recorded up to 120 kg N/ha applied to it when it was preceded by cowpea closely followed clusterbean. Interaction of grain yield, test weight and stover yield also followed similar trend.
