Effect of rice (Oryza sativa) + cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) intercropping on chemical properties of soil and crop productivity

In a field trial at Jorhat, Assam in summer 1989, rice Culture 1 and cowpeas EC 4216 were grown in pure stands or as 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 2:2, 3:2 or 3:3 rice:cowpea intercrops. Rice grain yield and cowpea fodder yield were decreased by intercropping, but the rice grain equivalent yield was highest from the 3:1 rice:cowpea intercrop. Yield of both crops increased with increasing NPK rate (no fertilizers, 20 kg N + 10 kg P2O5 + 10 kg K2O, or 30 kg N + 20 kg P2O5 + 20 kg K2O/ha).
