Effect of route of inoculation on the pathogenicity of pathogenic and apathogenic Escherichia coli strains in chickens

324 SPF fowls (1- or 45-days-old) were used in the study. In 1-day-old chicks, the oral route seemed more effective in inducing colibacillosis, whereas in 45-day-old fowls the respiratory tract seemed more important for reproducing the disease. The apathogenic strain was either absent or had been quickly eliminated from the blood, whereas the pathogenic always induced bacteraemia.
