Effect of salinity on anthocyanin accumulation in the root of maize

Anthocyanin accumulation as a stress response under higher salinity (treatments with KCl and NaCl, 1% and 2%) was studied in the roots of maize (Zea mays L. cv. Co. 1) at different stages of seedling growth. Results showed upto 40% increase in anthocyanin accumulation on dry weight basis and suggest that increase in anthocyanin accumulation may be a stress response and/or due to decreased mobilization of other nutrients into the primary root.
