Effect of schistosomiasis on histopathologic pattern of urothelium in 262 bladder biopsies

Effect of schistosomiasis on histopathologic pattern of urothelium in 262 bladder biopsies

Saudi Medical Journal 15(4): 305-308

The histopathology of 262 cystoscopic biopsy specimens was examined to evaluate the effect of schistosomiasis on the urothelial lining of the urinary bladder among patients from the Asir region of Saudi Arabia. Schistosomiasis was present in 91/262 cases (37.7%), non neoplastic urothelial lesions in 75 and primary bladder cancer in 61 cases. Of the 91 patients with schistosomiasis, 47 (51.5%) showed associated urothelial lesions of various types.
