Effect of season and exogenous melatonin on 24-hour plasma progesterone and luteinizing hormone in the ewe

Effect of season and exogenous melatonin on 24-hour plasma progesterone and luteinizing hormone in the ewe

Veterinarski Arhiv 64(4-6): 55-67

The influence of season and exogenous melatonin on plasma progesterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) was examined. Twenty-four-hour mid-luteal plasma progesterone and LH were determined during the breeding and non-breeding season in eight estrus-synchronized ewes. A diurnal (high night-time and low daytime) pattern was observed for both progesterone and LH during the breeding season, but not during seasonal anoestrus. Exogenous melatonin increased the values of both hormones, but seems to interfere with the observed day/night rhythm of progesterone, although not LH.
