Effect of seed deterioration on nitrate uptake by roots

The NO-3- uptake by roots from wheat seeds which have been stored under conditions which caused deterioration has been examined. It was found that roots from deteriorated seeds showed lower rate and extent of germination as well as a decreased NO-3- uptake as compared to the control. This may be very significant in soils over-fertilized with nitrates.
