Effect of several physical and chemical treatments on seed dormancy in the grass Andropogon gayanus

Seed of A. gayanus harvested in Guanacaste was stored in sealed bottles at 5 degrees C before being subjected to a range of physical and chemical treatments. Concentrated sulphuric acid significantly reduced germination; immersion in water at 80 degrees C for 2 min, in the synthetic cytokinin forchlorfenuron (5-20 micro g/ml) or heating of dry seeds to 40 degrees C for 24-96 h increased germination to 30-50%.
