Effect of short days alternating with long days on antler cycle and testicular function in Formosan sika deer

Eight adult Formosan sika deer (Cervus taiouanus) were randomly alloted to groups C or L. Group C was subjected to the natural photoperiod; group L was exposed to 2 months of short days (8 h light:16 h darkness) alternating with 4 months of long days (16 h light:8 h darkness) for 25 months, starting in Sep. Stags in group C completed an antler cycle once a year with a velvet phase averaging 132 +or-16 days.
