Effect of sodium chloride on serum proteins and antibody titre of broiler chickens

Effect of sodium chloride on serum proteins and antibody titre of broiler chickens

Indian Veterinary Journal 72(5): 441-445

Commercial broiler chicks, at 7 days of age, were divided into four groups, each having 25 birds, and given feed containing 0.5 (control), 1, 1.5 and 2 percent Sodium Chloride (NaCl). Serum total proteins and albumin were significantly lesser in broilers given 1, 1.5 and 2 percent NaCl compared with the control (0.5% NaCl) group. Serum globulins and A/G ratio did not differ between various treatments. Geometric mean titre (GMT) against ND vaccine decreased with increasing concentrations (1%, 1.5% and 2%) of dietary NaCl. Wattle reaction to mallein showed a tendency of greater response to mallein with increasing NaCl concentration compared with the control group (P lt 0.002). The study suggests that excess NaCl may influence immune response in broiler chickens.
