Effect of soil depth on the rooting system growth in Glycyrrhiza glabra L

Licorice (G. glabra) has stolons arising from a tap root but the active constituent, glycyrrhizin, is found in the bark parenchyma. Plants were grown in pots with soil of varying depths: 20, 37, 52, 72 and 89 cm, which corresponded to soil volumes of 85, 170, 255, 340 and 425 litres, respectively. Root growth was monitored over 3 years. After 3 years, the fresh root yield ranged from 1346 g (in 340 litres) to 1881 g (in 425 litres).
