Effect of sori washing in the germination of telioid teliospores of Puccinia pampeana

The Capsicum spp. rust, P. pampeana, is autoecious and presents, in its life cycle, two teleomorphs. One is Aecidium-like (Endophyllum), the other Puccinia-like. The endophylloid spore, unicellular and catenulate, germinates rapidly under favourable environmental conditions while, the Puccinia-like, pulvinate and two-celled, is dormant. The present studies were, carried out in order to determine the presence of a germination inhibitor in the Puccinia-like teliospores. A small apparatus developed for teliospore germination studies, dubbed "germinatelio", was employed. Using a special washing technique the spores were washed daily with distilled water and a direct relationship between washing and teliospore germination was evident. The inhibitor was not readily soluble in water because, in spite of daily washings with distilled water, sori produced and released basidiospores for a period of 72 consecutive days. A relationship between the phenomenon studied in laboratory conditions and the probable survival mechanisms of the pathogen in its ecosystem was established. It is worth mentioning that contrary to the well known Puccinia graminis rust fungus whose teliospores overwinter, the teliospores of this subtropical rust fungus, P. pampeana, "oversummer".
