Effect of sowing time in relation to different varieties on major insect pests and grain yield of pigeonpea in Gujarat State

Six pigeon pea varieties (Pusa ageti, BDN-1, BDN-2, Bhadbhoot, Nylon and T-15-15) were sown on 6 dates (1 July, 15 July, 1 August, 15 August, 1 September and 15 September 1983 and 1984 in Gujarat, India. Damage to pods and grains by Heliothis armigera and Melanagromyza obtusa, resp., was determined at harvest. The maximum yield was obtained following sowing on 1 July. The Nylon and Bhadbhoot varieties had the least damage and greatest yield in areas where H. armigera was the main pest.
