In Wistar rats fed on a diet with 20% soya protein isolate (SPI) with a relatively high content of cystine for 2 weeks, protein concentration in gastrocnemius muscle was higher than that in rats fed on casein. Compared with casein, 5% SPI alleviated the loss of muscle protein. Exercise performance, measured by treadmill running, was better with SPI than with casein.
