Effect of squirrels on the natural regeneration of Pinus koraiensis

Effect of squirrels on the natural regeneration of Pinus koraiensis

Lesovedenie ( 6): 74-78

A study was made in native mixed Pinus koraiensis/hardwood forests in the Ussuriisk forest reserve (Far East of Russia) on the effect of the feeding habits of the Manchurian squirrel Sciurus vulgaris mantschuricus on the natural regeneration of P. koraiensis. In years with small seed crops, the squirrels made caches of seed in the soil, preferring dense conifer stands where the snow is not so deep. Here the amount of seeds cached by squirrels exceeds 2.4 kg/ha (= ~4500 seeds).
