Effect of stage of maturity on seed moisture content, dry weight, germination and seedling vigour in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.)

In a field experiment in 1975 in Nigeria, cowpeas Ife Brown were harvested on various days after anthesis (DAA). Seed growth terminated at about 21 DAA and seed moisture content decreased with seed age. Seeds became viable at 15 DAA but the fresh seeds had poor germination compared with the air dried seeds (4 vs. 70%).
