Effect of sub-optimum cultural practices on wheat yield in plateau region of Bihar

Results of the field experiment revealed that sowing or wheat on November 20-22 recorded greater number of earheads/m-2 and higher test weight of grains which ultimately helped in producing high grain and straw yields. Use of 100 kg seeds/ha also favourably influenced the number of earheads/m-2 and produced high grain and straw yields. Application of 100-22-25 kg N-P-K/ha provided maximum benefit for obtaining greater number of earheads/m-2 and high number of grains/earhead and test weight of grains. It recorded highest yields of grain (35.2 q/ha) and straw (48.6 q/ha). Delay in sowing by 15 days, seed application of 75 kg/ha and half of the recommended fertiliser dose suppressed the yield components which resulted in 25.4, 20.8 and 44.7% reduction in wheat yield respectively, against the optimum practices. Computed plant protection did not influenced the yield components but it increased yield by 9.5%.
