Effect of substrate on the colonization of experimental ponds by Chironomidae (Diptera)

Effect of substrate on the colonization of experimental ponds by Chironomidae (Diptera)

Journal of Freshwater Ecology 10(1): 57-63

The influence of substrate type on larval chironomid community structure was studied in a controlled experiment in small artificial ponds. 3 types of sediments of different particle size and organic content were colonized naturally over two 8-week periods. Total abundance and species composition varied with substrate type. Clay treatment ponds had the lowest abundance and were dominated by Chironomus spp., while gravel and sand-silt treatment ponds were dominated by Kiefferulus dux.
