Effect of twinning by embryo transfer on vitamin A and beta -carotene status of newborn calves

Embryos of Japanese Black, Japanese Brown and Holstein x Japanese Black cattle were transferred into 23 Holstein recipients and 19 Japanese Black, 7 Japanese Brown and 4 crossbred calves were born. Calves were assigned to groups: 4 single calves born from primiparous cows, 12 single calves born from multiparous cows, and 14 twin calves born from multiparous cows. Calves were housed individually and given colostrum 1 kg at birth and thereafter 2 kg twice daily for 1 week.
