Effect of weed-management practice and nitrogen on Indian mustard (Brassica juncea)

In field trials conducted on clay soil at Navasari during 1989-90 and 1990-91, the effects were evaluated of various weed control treatments (pendimethalin and alachlor with or without one hand weeding 45 d after sowing (DAS), hand weeding twice at 25 and 45 DAS, interrow cultivation once 25 DAS, hand weeding once 25 DAS and interrow cultivation once at 25 DAS + hand weeding once at 45 DAS) and nitrogen treatments (60, 75 and 90 kg/ha) on weed control in and seed yields of Indian mustard Varuna. All weed control treatments reduced weed DW from untreated control values of 28.38-28.41 kg/ha to 9.24-17.73 kg and increased Indian mustard seed yields from 830 kg/ha to 985-1400 kg. Hand weeding twice resulted in the greatest weed control and crop yields. Increasing nitrogen concn increased crop seed yields from 1069 kg with 60 kg N to 1274 with 90 kg N. Varying nitrogen concn had a variable effect on weed DW.
